On January 28, 1986, Fermin Uriza, a Hispanic male, was murdered in South Florida by Manuel Pardo Jr., a former police officer turned serial killer. Uriza was among the nine victims—six men and three women—whom Pardo killed over a 92-day period between January and April 1986. Pardo targeted individuals he accused of being involved in drug trafficking, often executing them with a firearm. He documented his crimes by taking photographs of the victims and writing detailed accounts in his diary, which was later found by investigators along with newspaper clippings about the murders.
Pardo's killing spree was brought to an end when he was apprehended in New York City after seeking treatment for a gunshot wound to his foot, sustained during one of the murders. Ballistic evidence linked the bullet to those found in his victims. A search of his home revealed a collection of Nazi memorabilia, his diary, and other incriminating evidence.
During his trial in 1988, Pardo confessed to the murders, claiming he was on a mission to eliminate drug dealers. He was convicted on nine counts of first-degree murder and sentenced to death. Pardo was executed by lethal injection on December 11, 2012, at Florida State Prison, after spending 24 years on death row.
