On April 6, 2024, a tragic incident occurred at the Martini Bar in CityPlace Doral, Florida, resulting in the death of 23-year-old George Alejandro Castellanos. Castellanos, who was working as the head of security at the bar, was a student at Florida International University pursuing degrees in biological science and criminal justice, with aspirations to become a police officer. He was also a father to a one-year-old daughter.
The incident began when an altercation among bar patrons broke out around 3:30 AM. As Castellanos attempted to intervene and break up the fight, a 37-year-old man named Jamal Wayne Wood pulled out a handgun and shot Castellanos. Wood's actions led to a shootout with Doral Police officers who were responding to the scene. During the exchange of fire, Wood was killed by the police.
The shootout resulted in significant injuries to several individuals. A Doral police officer, a four-year veteran of the force, was shot in the lower leg and applied a tourniquet immediately after being struck. Six civilians were also injured: Lester Williams Gonzalez, 28; Frank Miguel Jerez, 34; Yaniris Jerez, 30; Carlos Milan, 38; Sonia Munoz Torres, 48; and Gerard Patrick Delaney, 57. One of the victims, Carlos Milan, was critically injured after being struck four times.
The incident has prompted a thorough investigation involving the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the Miami-Dade Police Department, and the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office. The Doral Police Department, along with officers from the neighboring Medley and Sweetwater departments, assisted in the response.
In the aftermath of the shooting, City of Doral officials have called for a review of the city's ordinances regarding nightclubs. Mayor Christi Fraga proposed amendments to reduce the operating hours of nightclubs and bars, and to mandate the use of metal detectors at entrances. The community has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Castellanos, who was remembered for his "infectious smile and uplifting energy" and his bright future ahead.
The Martini Bar and CityPlace Doral have emphasized their commitment to the safety of their guests, with the bar owners stating that their hearts are broken by the tragedy and that additional security measures have been put in place. The incident has also raised questions about the adequacy of security protocols at the bar, particularly since a key employee responsible for patting down patrons for weapons was not present that night, and whether the replacement staff were properly trained to handle such situations.
