Charles Stewart, a 65-year-old African-American male, tragically lost his life on the evening of March 12, 2014, after becoming ensnared in a house fire in Las Vegas, Nevada. The blaze, which erupted in the 1200 block of West Washington Avenue, near J Street, drew a swift response from both Las Vegas police and firefighters. Upon their arrival at approximately 11 p.m., they discovered a distressing scene.
The single-story home was fortified with metal bars on its windows and a barred
security door, transforming it into a perilous trap. A woman was found trapped behind the metal door, and officers had to use bolt cutters to free her. She was subsequently transported to University Medical Center to be treated for smoke inhalation. Tragically, Stewart was unable to escape from another part of the house, which was also secured with metal bars on the windows. Firefighters were able to locate him once they gained entry to the burning structure.
In the immediate aftermath, the Clark County coroner's office identified the victim as Charles Ray Stewart. However, the official cause and manner of his death were not immediately released pending an investigation. Early reports did not indicate that the fire was suspicious in nature, and as of now, there is no publicly available information to suggest that an arson or homicide investigation was conducted. Consequently, there have been no reports of any suspects or arrests in connection with the fire that claimed Charles Stewart's life. The incident also took a toll on the first responders, with twelve firefighters requiring treatment for smoke inhalation sustained while battling the blaze.
