In late August 1993, 88-year-old white female Bernice Augusta Fagotte of Peoria, Illinois, hired Joseph Robert Miller to perform home repairs. Miller, a white male with a history of violent crimes, had recently been paroled after serving 15 years for the 1977 murders of two women in Cook County. Fagotte, known for her kindness, befriended Miller, rented him a place to live, and employed him for yard work.
