In late August 1993, 88-year-old white female Bernice Augusta Fagotte of Peoria, Illinois, hired Joseph Robert Miller to perform home repairs. Miller, a white male with a history of violent crimes, had recently been paroled after serving 15 years for the 1977 murders of two women in Cook County.
