In 1974, her husband, Sylvester “Bud” Rearden, died under mysterious circumstances, but no charges were filed. Later, in 1987, McGinnis was convicted for the murder of Deana Hubbard Wild, a 20-year-old White female and her son's girlfriend, whom she pushed off a cliff in Big Sur, California, after taking out a $35,000 life insurance policy on her.
Despite suspicions, Virginia McGinnis was never charged in connection with her mother's death due to insufficient evidence. She died in prison on June 25, 2011, at the age of 74, serving a life sentence for the murder of Deana Wild.
