Destenie Alexandria Mendez, a 28-year-old woman from Dallas, Texas, tragically lost her life on January 1, 2025. She was the property manager of an apartment complex and was responding to complaints about a group of individuals drinking and playing loud music in the parking lot. Her husband, Kevin Violante-Varela, was with her at the time. When Mendez approached the group to ask them to leave, they refused.
Witnesses reported that Violante-Varela then exited the vehicle with a firearm and began shooting. In an attempt to stop him, Mendez was fatally shot in the head.
Authorities responded to the scene at an apartment complex in the 2900 block of St. George Drive in the Red Bird area of Dallas. First responders found Mendez deceased at the scene, while three other individuals suffered gunshot wounds and were transported to a local hospital, where they remained in stable condition. Violante-Varela was arrested and charged with murder. He is currently being held in the Dallas County Jail on a $500,000 bond. The case remains under investigation.
Mendez is survived by her parents, Juan Antonio Villagran and Veronica Mendez, her husband, Kevin V. Varela, her two children, Kevin Antonio Varela and Genesis Alessa Varela, and her sister, Stephanie Alexia Villagran. Her passing has left a profound impact on her family and community, who mourn her loss and remember her as a beloved individual.
