On February 12, 2025, at approximately 5:50 PM, officers from the Big Spring Police Department responded to reports of a gunshot victim at the intersection of 14th and Goliad in Big Spring, Texas. Upon arrival, they discovered Ricky Flores Mier, a 38-year-old Hispanic male, deceased inside a white GMC Yukon. Another occupant of the vehicle, a 34-year-old Hispanic male, had also sustained gunshot wounds and was immediately transported to Scenic Mountain Medical Center before being flown to UMC Lubbock for further treatment. Witnesses at the scene reported that a small black car had fired shots at the GMC Yukon, prompting authorities to launch an investigation.
Detectives from the Big Spring Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division swiftly pursued leads and located a vehicle matching the suspect description in the 600 block of E. 17th Street. A search warrant was executed at the residence associated with the vehicle, leading to the arrest of Tony Magallanes, a 39-year-old Hispanic male. Authorities charged Magallanes with the murder of Ricky Flores Mier and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the injuries sustained by the 34-year-old Hispanic male. Investigators determined that the incident stemmed from a road rage altercation and that the individuals involved were not previously acquainted.
At the time of the police department’s official statement, the 34-year-old Hispanic male was expected to recover from his injuries. The tragic event has left the Big Spring community in mourning, as Ricky Flores Mier was a lifelong resident known for his dedication to his family and his work at the Boys & Girls Club. His passing has deeply affected his loved ones, including his children, siblings, and extended family. A memorial service in his honor was planned for a later date.
