A quiet Saturday night in the West Texas city of Big Spring was shattered by gunfire that tore through a young couple's home, leaving a husband dead and his wife seriously injured. Cody Brim, a 23-year-old man, was killed in the sudden and violent attack at his residence, a crime that remains a painful, unanswered question for his family and the community. Cody was part of a family with roots in the area; his late uncle, Justin Troy Brim, had also lived in Big Spring and worked in the region's prominent oil industry.

The fatal attack occurred at approximately 11:25 p.m. on October 24, 2026. Cody and his wife, 21-year-old Sydney Valenzuela, were inside their house in the 300 block of East 8th Street, a residential neighborhood in the heart of the city. Without warning, one or more unknown individuals approached the home and fired multiple rounds directly into the structure. The bullets pierced the walls, striking both Cody and Sydney in a terrifying and indiscriminate assault. The motive for this targeted act of violence was not made public.

When officers from the Big Spring Police Department arrived at the scene in response to a shots-fired call, they found a chaotic and tragic situation. Sydney, though wounded, was able to report that she and her husband had been inside their home when the shooting began. Officers located Cody inside the residence; he was unresponsive. Both had sustained gunshot wounds from the ambush.

Emergency personnel from the Big Spring Fire Department arrived and began providing immediate medical aid. The couple was quickly transported to the Shannon Medical Center Emergency Room for treatment. At the hospital, doctors attended to Sydney’s injuries, which she survived. Tragically, Cody’s wounds proved to be fatal. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead, his life abruptly and senselessly ended.

The investigation into Cody Brim's murder was launched immediately, with the Big Spring Police Department leading the effort. Given the serious nature of the crime, they were soon joined by the Texas Department of Public Safety's elite Texas Rangers and specialized identification personnel. The combined team of investigators began the meticulous process of examining the crime scene, collecting evidence from the bullet-riddled home, and canvassing the neighborhood for any potential witnesses or information that could lead them to the perpetrators.

In the days following the homicide, authorities confirmed they were pursuing active leads and had identified persons of interest in connection with the shooting. However, they did not release the names of these individuals or elaborate on their potential connection to the crime. No suspects were publicly named, and no arrests were announced, leaving a cloud of uncertainty over the case. The investigation remains active and ongoing.

As of late October 2026, the people responsible for firing into the couple's home, ending Cody Brim's life and forever altering his wife's, have not been brought to justice. The community is left to wonder why this young couple was targeted. Authorities continue to seek help from the public to solve this violent crime and provide closure for a grieving family.
