In the late evening hours of January 9, 2026, a burst of gunfire shattered the quiet of a Big Spring, Texas neighborhood, leaving 36-year-old Phillip Samuel Lozano Jr. dead. Big Spring Police Department officers were dispatched to a residence in the 2600 block of Langley Drive around 10:32 p.m. following reports of shots being fired.
Upon their arrival, they encountered 43-year-old Joel Adrian Florez and a 40-year-old woman standing outside the home. Inside, they discovered Lozano, who had sustained fatal gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. Florez initially told investigators that Lozano, who he claimed was armed, had forcibly entered his home, leading him to shoot in self-defense.
Despite Florez's initial statement, an investigation conducted by Big Spring Police Department detectives, with assistance from the Texas Rangers, led to a different conclusion. Based on the evidence gathered at the scene, authorities determined there was probable cause to charge Florez with murder. An arrest warrant was issued, and Florez was taken into custody on January 10. He was subsequently booked into the Howard County Detention Center on a murder charge, with his bond set at $1 million.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and authorities have not released further details about what led them to pursue a murder charge, nor have they commented on the nature of the relationship, if any, between Lozano and the individuals present at the residence.
