In the afternoon hours of January 20, 2024, a burst of gunfire shattered the routine at a gas station located at 72nd and Grover streets in Omaha, Nebraska, claiming the life of 30-year-old Hispanic male Grover Kriss Flores. Flores was inside a vehicle with two other individuals when a man approached and opened fire on them. Responding paramedics found Flores in critical condition and immediately administered CPR before rushing him to a nearby hospital.
Despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries. The two other occupants of the car, Angel Moran, 23, and Samantha Fox, 20, also sustained gunshot wounds but their injuries were reported as non-life-threatening.
The investigation into the shooting, which marked Omaha's first homicide of the year, quickly led authorities to a suspect. A 16-year-old male, Delvin Amaya, was arrested in connection with the killing. He was subsequently charged as an adult with first-degree murder, two counts of second-degree assault, and three counts of using a weapon to commit a felony. Another man, identified as Amaya's father, Mario Amaya Castillo, was also arrested and charged with being an accessory to the crime and tampering with evidence.
Court proceedings revealed that the fatal encounter stemmed from a social media dispute that was intended to be settled with a fight. Instead, Delvin Amaya fired approximately 12 shots into the vehicle occupied by Flores, Moran, and Fox. In a subsequent plea agreement, Delvin Amaya, who had turned 17, pleaded no contest to second-degree murder and use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony. In exchange for his plea, several other charges were to be dismissed. He could face a sentence of up to life in prison.
