In the late hours of a Friday night in Virginia Beach, a seemingly routine traffic stop escalated into a tragic event that claimed the lives of two police officers, including 25-year-old Cameron Girvin. On February 21, 2025, Officer Girvin and his partner, Officer Christopher Reese, pulled over a vehicle for an expired license plate. The driver, identified as 42-year-old John McCoy III, became confrontational and initially refused to exit his car.
When McCoy finally stepped out of the
vehicle, a physical altercation ensued with the two officers. During the struggle, McCoy produced a handgun and shot both Girvin and Reese multiple times. After the initial shots, and while the officers were on the ground and defenseless, McCoy shot each of them a second time before calmly walking away from the scene. Both officers were transported to local hospitals, but tragically succumbed to their injuries.
Following the shooting, a manhunt for McCoy was launched. He was later discovered in a nearby shed with what authorities believe to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. An investigation into McCoy's background revealed a prior felony conviction from 2009. There was another individual present in the vehicle with McCoy at the time of the traffic stop, but no charges were expected to be filed against them.
The loss of Officer Cameron Girvin, who had served with the Virginia Beach Police Department for five years, and his partner sent shockwaves through the community. Friends and colleagues remembered Girvin as a dedicated and determined public servant with a stellar reputation and an unwavering work ethic. He was survived by his expectant wife and parents. The tragic event served as a painful reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty.
