Jharvez Reid, a 33-year-old Black/African American man, was fatally shot following a late-night confrontation on Milwaukee’s north side on January 24, 2025. Although the shooting occurred shortly before midnight, court records later reported that Reid was brought to a hospital just after midnight on January 25 and died less than 15 minutes after being admitted. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office subsequently identified him as the man killed in the shooting.
According to the criminal complaint, Reid was driving a truck eastbound on Mill Road with his brother when a white vehicle sped past them near North 60th Street. Reid reportedly became upset and caught up with the vehicle at a traffic light. His brother told investigators that Reid appeared to exchange words with the people inside the other vehicle. As the encounter continued along Mill Road, the vehicles eventually reached the area near North 49th Street.
The confrontation escalated quickly. Reid’s brother said they had begun pulling away when he suddenly heard multiple gunshots. Reid then told him that he had been shot, and their vehicle came to a stop. Realizing Reid was badly wounded, his brother moved him into the back seat and drove him directly to a hospital. Despite the effort to get him medical treatment, Reid succumbed to his gunshot wounds shortly after arriving.
Milwaukee police responded to the area of North 49th Street and West Mill Road and began collecting evidence. Detectives recovered five spent cartridge casings from the intersection. Investigators also obtained doorbell-camera footage that prosecutors said captured the shooting, then searched for additional surveillance video that could help identify the vehicle and the person responsible. Initially, police announced that no arrests had been made and said they were searching for an unknown suspect or suspects.
The investigation eventually focused on a white Toyota. According to the criminal complaint, detectives were able to identify and locate the vehicle. A witness who had been inside it gave investigators an account that differed somewhat from Reid’s brother’s description of how the encounter began. The witness said Reid’s truck had cut off the Toyota near 60th Street and that the two vehicles subsequently began slowing down and speeding up as they traveled along Mill Road. Eventually, according to that witness, the vehicles stopped alongside one another in the roadway.
Investigators identified 20-year-old Memphis Hodges as the alleged shooter. According to the witness account described in court filings, Hodges exchanged words with someone in Reid’s truck while holding what the witness described as a large firearm. Prosecutors alleged that Hodges then fired multiple rounds toward Reid’s vehicle. The physical evidence recovered from the intersection, surveillance footage, witness interviews and the identification of the Toyota became central pieces of the case assembled by detectives.
By early February 2025, Milwaukee County prosecutors had charged Hodges with first-degree reckless homicide in connection with Reid’s death. He made an initial court appearance on February 2, where bond was set at $250,000. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for February 10. The filing marked a significant development from the first days of the investigation, when police had publicly described the shooter as unknown.
