Ivory F. Hamby, 73, a White man, died on January 26, 2025, after violence erupted at a home along Deerlodge Highway near the Sunbright community in Morgan County, Tennessee. By late morning, the quiet rural stretch had become the center of an urgent law-enforcement response, with deputies arriving to a scene that would leave one person dead and another fighting through injuries.
Deputies with the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office were called to the residence at around 11 a.m.
and found Hamby dead when they got there. In the same incident, a woman was wounded and taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for treatment. As word spread, authorities moved quickly to reassure residents that the danger had not spilled outward into the community.
District Attorney General Russell Johnson said a suspect was taken into custody, and officials stated there was no threat to the public. Even with someone detained, the case did not settle into certainty: investigators said the motive was still unknown, and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation took over the investigation as the scene was processed and the early picture of what happened was pieced together.
An autopsy was ordered by Morgan County medical examiner Tom Boduch as part of determining the circumstances surrounding Hamby’s death. Beyond confirming that a suspect had been arrested, authorities released little else in the immediate aftermath, emphasizing that the inquiry was ongoing and that additional details had not yet been made public.
Away from the headlines, Hamby’s obituary remembered him as a generous person who would help anyone, no matter who they were. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Edith Hamby; a sister, Gladys Rodgers; and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Ann Hamby. He left behind his wife, Beatrice Hamby; sons Ivory John Hamby and Wade Hamby ; grandchildren Jerika Hamby and JC Hamby ; great-grandchildren Kallum, Jupiter, and Klouse; brothers Jr., James, and Sam Hamby; sisters Marilyn, Sue, Sharon, and Pam; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. The family chose cremation with no services.
