Enrique Reyes, a 64-year-old retired professor from East Carolina University, was tragically killed on January 10, 2025, in Greenville, North Carolina. Reyes, who was Hispanic, was fatally shot in his driveway on Forest Acres Drive. Authorities believe his murder was part of a larger crime spree that resulted in the deaths of two other elderly victims.
The suspect, 55-year-old David Lever, was arrested and charged with the killings.
Lever, a real estate agent, allegedly began his violent rampage just after 1 p.m. on January 10. Surveillance footage showed Reyes purchasing food at a local grocery store at 1:20 p.m. before returning home. Minutes later, Lever was seen coming and going from his own residence on the same street. At 1:41 p.m., Lever drove to a gas station in his van, refueled, and left at 1:44 p.m., firing shots as he departed.
Lever then traveled to Peace Ridge Court, where he entered the home of 80-year-old Anthony Gribble and his wife, 76-year-old Paula Gribble. The couple, both Caucasian, were shot and killed inside their residence. Their son, who lived next door, intervened and held Lever at gunpoint until deputies arrived. Authorities believe that if the son had not acted, Lever would have continued his killing spree.
At approximately 3:35 p.m., a passerby noticed an unconscious man in Reyes' driveway and called emergency services. Deputies arrived to find Reyes deceased from multiple gunshot wounds. Investigators later executed search warrants at Lever’s home and discovered an arsenal of over 50 firearms and large quantities of ammunition. Lever was booked into the Pitt County Jail on three counts of murder and is being held without bond.
Officials revealed that Lever had a history of domestic issues, and his erratic behavior had been reported to law enforcement in the past. During his court hearing, Lever reportedly displayed aggressive behavior, cursing at the judge. Authorities continue to investigate the motive behind the killings, but preliminary reports suggest that Lever may have had prior interactions with Reyes and the Gribbles.
