In the early morning hours of January 20, 2025, violence shattered the quiet of a home on Commonwealth Avenue in Duquesne, Pennsylvania, leaving 30-year-old Sean Johnson Jr. dead. Another individual, 39-year-old Catherine Lawing, was also critically injured in the shooting and succumbed to her injuries a few days later in the hospital. Both Johnson and Lawing died from gunshot wounds to the head.
The events of that tragic morning unfolded just after 5 a.m.
When first responders arrived at the residence, they discovered Johnson in the living room, already deceased. Lawing was found at the base of the stairs and was rushed to UPMC Mercy hospital. The subsequent investigation by the Allegheny County Police Homicide Unit pieced together the moments leading up to the fatal shootings. Witnesses reported that an argument had taken place between Johnson and another man, Ishmeil Muhammad, aged 28. Tensions had apparently been simmering for weeks between the two men over their attraction to the same woman.
Following an intense investigation that utilized witness statements and surveillance video, authorities identified Ishmeil Muhammad as the primary suspect. Evidence suggested that after the shooting, Muhammad fled the scene, and a ghost gun was later discovered by detectives in a nearby sewer grate. Phone records also played a role in tracking Muhammad's movements. In March 2025, police arrested Muhammad and charged him with two counts of criminal homicide, as well as illegal possession of a firearm, carrying a firearm without a license, and tampering with evidence. A prior robbery conviction made it illegal for him to possess a firearm. Muhammad is currently being held in the Allegheny County Jail awaiting his preliminary hearing.
