On the morning of February 19, 2025, tragedy struck outside the Cabarrus County Social Services office in Kannapolis, North Carolina. Yamilaine Sosa-Julian, a 19-year-old Hispanic female, was shot and killed alongside her mother, Maria Julian-Pichardo, a 45-year-old Hispanic female. The suspect, Rafael Lopez, a 51-year-old Hispanic male, was identified as Julian-Pichardo’s husband and Sosa-Julian’s stepfather.
Authorities confirmed that the incident was a domestic-related murder-suicide.
The shooting occurred around 8:30 a.m. when officers responded to reports of gunfire outside the Social Services office. Upon arrival, law enforcement found Yamilaine Sosa-Julian, a 19-year-old Hispanic female, and her mother deceased from gunshot wounds in the parking lot. Witnesses reported seeing Lopez flee the scene in a vehicle, prompting a police pursuit into Rowan County. The chase ended when Lopez pulled over on Lower Palmer Road, where he fatally shot himself.
Investigators revealed that the fatal encounter stemmed from ongoing domestic issues. Authorities had been investigating Lopez and Julian-Pichardo since February 1, following a domestic incident at their home. Multiple firearms were confiscated from the residence, and Lopez was arrested on February 6 for domestic assault. He was released on a $5,000 bail but was later served with a domestic protective order on February 14. The victims were at the Social Services office on the morning of February 19 to discuss the previous domestic incident when the shooting occurred.
Advocates against domestic violence have highlighted this case as part of a growing trend of intimate partner violence-related homicides. Experts warn that resources for survivors are increasingly strained, making it more difficult for victims to seek protection.
