On February 20, 2025, Levonte Hyde, a 30-year-old African American male, was fatally shot in Cincinnati, Ohio. The incident occurred in the 1600 block of Pasadena Avenue, where officers responded to reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, they found Hyde suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency responders transported him to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
Authorities quickly identified and arrested 15-year-old Ronez Joyce in connection with the shooting. Joyce was charged with murder on the same day as the incident. According to court documents, Hyde had an active warrant for domestic violence against Joyce’s mother. Reports indicate that Hyde allegedly assaulted the woman while they were driving, prompting her to call her son. Joyce then retrieved a firearm from a locked box and, upon encountering Hyde, fired 12 shots at him.
The case took a significant turn when Joyce accepted a plea deal, reducing his charges from murder and felonious assault to involuntary manslaughter. Prosecutors agreed not to push for the case to be moved to adult court, and Joyce was sentenced to six years in a youth prison. During the court proceedings, Hyde’s family expressed forgiveness toward Joyce, acknowledging the circumstances that led to the tragic event. Hyde’s mother addressed Joyce directly, stating that she did not blame him for the incident but rather the situation that had escalated between Hyde and Joyce’s mother.
The courtroom was tense as family members from both sides exchanged words, requiring intervention from deputies. Joyce, visibly emotional, broke down during the hearing, while his mother attempted to comfort him. Hyde’s brother also spoke to Joyce, encouraging him to make the best of his situation and remain strong. Joyce’s attorney later stated that the teen had acted out of distress over his mother’s repeated abuse and expressed hope that Joyce would reintegrate into society as a law-abiding citizen after serving his sentence.
