On May 11, 2025, 20-year-old Black male Dwaylon Skylar was fatally shot during a confrontation at an apartment complex on Clark Road in Cedar Hill, Texas. Upon arrival, Cedar Hill police officers found Skylar with multiple gunshot wounds to the chest. He was transported to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The incident stemmed from a dispute among neighbors. According to an arrest warrant affidavit, Skylar's sister reported that when she arrived to pick up her child, a fight was already underway. She stated that the sister of 17-year-old Chance Bennett, who is also Black, called him to the scene. Upon arrival, Bennett allegedly shot Skylar, who returned fire, grazing Bennett's head. Bennett later appeared at a hospital for treatment of his injury and was identified as the suspect. He claimed that he shot Skylar because Skylar had pointed a gun at him and his family, threatening them.
Bennett was arrested and charged with murder. He is currently held at DeSoto's Tri-City Regional Jail with a bond set at $1 million.
