On March 22, 2025, Teresa Rene Adams-Pugh, a 54-year-old African American woman, was tragically killed in her home in Garner, North Carolina, in what authorities have classified as a murder-suicide. Her husband, 53-year-old Christopher Pugh, was identified as the perpetrator. The couple had been married for over 20 years and were known in their community as family-oriented and supportive neighbors. Family members and friends expressed shock, noting that there were no prior signs of domestic violence or indications of turmoil within the marriage.
The incident unfolded when a 911 call was made from the Pugh residence at approximately 6:44 p.m. The caller hung up without speaking, prompting dispatchers to call back. Christopher Pugh answered and denied making the call, but a woman could be heard in the background pleading, "Why do you want to kill me? I need help." Deputies were dispatched to the scene and, upon arrival, heard what appeared to be gunshots from inside the home. Despite repeated attempts to contact the occupants, there was no response. A search warrant was obtained, and upon entry around 11 p.m., both Teresa and Christopher were found deceased from gunshot wounds.
Teresa Adams-Pugh was remembered by her family as a vibrant and loving individual. She had four children and 14 grandchildren and was described as the "life of our family party" by her mother, Marion Shaw. Her granddaughter, Daniya Adams-Smith, highlighted Teresa's unwavering support and pride in her family's achievements.
The community and family continue to mourn the loss, grappling with the unexpected nature of the tragedy. The Johnston County Sheriff's Office is investigating the case as a murder-suicide, with no additional suspects involved. Funeral services for Teresa were held at Poplar Springs Christian Church in Raleigh, followed by burial at Carolina Biblical Gardens in Garner.
