In the Williamsbridge neighborhood of the Bronx, a 31-year-old first-grade teacher named Jessica Hoyle was found shot to death in her home on Mickle Avenue on April 1, 2025. Police responded to a 911 call about an assault in progress just after 11 p.m. and discovered Ms. Hoyle with a fatal gunshot wound to her head. Emergency medical services pronounced her dead at the scene.
The incident was investigated as a domestic one.
Jessica Hoyle was a dedicated teacher at Children's Aide College Prep Charter School, where she was beloved by her students and colleagues. Her mother, who lived in the apartment below her, recalled her daughter's caring nature and the support she had provided her through health issues. She also recounted hearing an argument between her daughter and her boyfriend before the fatal gunshot. In the wake of her death, the community gathered for a vigil to honor her memory, lighting candles outside her apartment. Her school closed to allow students and staff to grieve and attend the vigil.
The New York Police Department sought Jessica Hoyle's 37-year-old boyfriend, Shannon Graham, for questioning in connection with her death. Two days after Ms. Hoyle was killed, police located Graham at a residence on Pratt Avenue. When officers arrived, he barricaded himself inside. Following a standoff with police, Shannon Graham was found dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
