In the quiet community of Lauderdale, Mississippi, the life of 15-year-old Treyvone Young was tragically cut short on Christmas Eve, just one day before he would have celebrated his sixteenth birthday. A student at Northeast Lauderdale High School, Young was known as a dedicated athlete, actively participating in football, basketball, and baseball.
On the evening of December 24th, a shooting occurred in the 9500 block of Northeast Cole Road. Young was at a family member's home, looking forward to playing video games and spending time with loved ones for the holiday. The incident, which took place around 7:10 p.m., resulted in Young and two other individuals being shot. The other victims were identified as 64-year-old Johnnie L. Mosley and 48-year-old Shunda Faye Brown. All three succumbed to their injuries.
In the wake of the shooting, authorities arrested 50-year-old Joseph Spinks of Toomsuba. Spinks was initially charged with one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder. Following the deaths of the other two victims, the charges against Spinks were upgraded to three counts of murder. Investigators believe the shooting was a targeted event, confirming that Spinks knew at least one of the victims. At the time of his arrest, Spinks was out on a felony DUI charge, and his previously issued bonds were revoked. The Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department also indicated they were seeking a second person of interest who may have been involved in the shooting. Spinks was booked into the Lauderdale County Detention Facility.
