On the night of May 3, 2025, tragedy struck at the Value Mart convenience store on Broadway Road and Highway 87 near Sanford, North Carolina. Alfredo Escalona Mares, a 50-year-old male employee, was shot and killed during an armed robbery. The Harnett County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene around 11:15 p.m., where they found Mares deceased inside the store. According to authorities, a masked suspect entered the establishment, demanded money, and fatally shot Mares before fleeing.
In addition to the shooting, the suspect also assaulted a customer, who was later transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators have described the suspect as a Black male, approximately 5’9” with a medium to heavy build. Surveillance footage captured the individual wearing black clothing from head to toe. Despite ongoing efforts, no arrests have been made in connection with the crime. The Harnett County Sheriff's Office, along with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has announced a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
Mares, originally from Mexico City, Mexico, was remembered by customers and loved ones as a kind and helpful individual. A GoFundMe campaign, reportedly organized by his daughter, was launched to assist with the financial challenges of relocating his remains to his native country. A memorial service was scheduled for May 13, where family and friends planned to gather in his honor.
Authorities continue to urge anyone with information to come forward and assist in the investigation. The community remains shaken by the violent incident, as many who knew Mares expressed disbelief and sorrow over his untimely death.
