In what should have been a quick trip to his local deli for a snack for his mother, 20-year-old Sorai King, a Black male, tragically lost his life. The incident unfolded on the afternoon of April 17, 2025, inside the Deli Grocery Corp. on Bronxwood Avenue in the Williamsbridge section of the Bronx, just a block from his home. An argument between King and another man, who was not an employee of the establishment, escalated with shocking suddenness.
The unidentified suspect pulled out a firearm and shot King in the neck and chest.
Emergency services were called to the scene around 1:30 p.m., where they found King with critical injuries. He was rushed to Jacobi Hospital, but the medical staff was unable to save him, and he was pronounced dead. The family, who had moved to the Bronx from Harlem six years prior in search of a better life for their youngest son, was left reeling in disbelief and grief. His sister expressed the unbearable pain of the loss, wishing it was all a bad dream, while his aunt tearfully called for justice for her nephew, stating that he did not deserve such a fate. His family described him as a good kid who was loved by everyone and insisted he never had problems with anyone.
The New York Police Department is actively investigating the homicide. While the exact nature of the dispute remains unclear, authorities have suggested that it may have been gang-related. Surveillance footage from the area captured the suspect fleeing the scene on foot. He was seen running from the deli, briefly re-entering, and then fleeing again up East 217th Street. Police have described the suspect as a male who was last seen wearing a black shirt with a floral pattern and a vest over it. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the fatal shooting, and the investigation is ongoing as authorities continue to search for the individual responsible for Sorai King's death. The police have urged anyone with information to come forward.
