In the twilight hours of March 21, 2025, the life of 18-year-old Hispanic male, Jason Gomez, was tragically cut short in a hail of gunfire at Young Park in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The evening began with the buzz of an unsanctioned car meetup, an event that drew a crowd to the park. However, the gathering took a dark turn as tensions between two groups escalated into a violent confrontation that would leave an indelible scar on the community.
Amidst the chaos, gunfire erupted, and Gomez
was struck multiple times, sustaining fatal wounds to his head, arm, and body. He died at the scene, becoming one of three fatalities in a mass shooting that also claimed the lives of 16-year-old Andrew Madrid and 19-year-old Dominick Estrada. Fifteen other individuals were wounded in the crossfire, turning a social gathering into a scene of carnage and despair.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the Las Cruces Police Department launched a thorough investigation. Detectives processed a scene littered with approximately 40 to 60 shell casings from four different handguns, a testament to the intensity of the shootout. Their efforts led to the arrest of four individuals in connection with the shooting: one adult and three juveniles.
The adult suspect, identified as Tomas Rivas, faced a judge on March 24, 2025. Two other men were also charged with three open counts of murder each, as the investigation continued to unfold.
