An argument that erupted during a neighborhood basketball game in Yazoo City, Mississippi, escalated into a fatal shooting that claimed the life of 29-year-old Dontavious Weekly. The incident occurred on the evening of Friday, March 28, 2025, in the 300 block of Chapman Street.
According to reports, a group was engaged in a basketball game when a dispute broke out over the game itself. In the ensuing violence, shots were fired, striking two individuals. Dontavious Weekly suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Yazoo County Coroner. A second victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
In the days following the shooting, the Yazoo City Police Department identified a suspect but did not immediately release his name as the search was ongoing. Subsequently, Devarius Taylor turned himself into the authorities at the Yazoo City Police Department. Taylor has been charged with murder and aggravated assault in connection with the deadly shooting. His bond was set at $1 million.
