In a tragic event that unfolded in a residence near Wolf Creek, Montana, Ty William Steinbach, a 64-year-old White male, died on May 1, 2025. The incident, which occurred at a home north of Highway 200, was determined by the Lewis and Clark County Sheriff's Office to be a murder-suicide.
Authorities reported that Ty William Steinbach was fatally shot by his younger brother, 61-year-old Scott Marvin Steinbach. The confrontation between the brothers took place while their parents were also in the home. Following the shooting, Scott Steinbach poured gasoline on his brother's body and set it on fire inside the house.
During the horrific event, the brothers' mother sustained burns while attempting to extinguish the flames. A hired hand who was present at the scene managed to move Ty Steinbach's body out of the fire. Though he had suffered burns, his body was still identifiable.
Shortly after killing his brother, Scott Steinbach died by suicide.
Ty Steinbach was a lifetime resident of the family ranch near Wolf Creek and a rancher by profession. He was a graduate of Augusta High School and attended Montana State University. Described as a devoted father and a hard worker, he was actively involved in his children's and other family members' sporting events. His obituary noted he was beloved by his family and the wider community. The investigation by the Lewis and Clark County Sheriff/Coroner Leo Dutton concluded that there were no other suspects involved and no arrests were made as the perpetrator was deceased.
