In the early morning hours of Saturday, March 15, 2025, the life of 28-year-old Kane Elliot Crockett was tragically cut short in Bay City, Michigan. Officers responded to the vicinity of 18th Street and South Sherman Street shortly after 2 a.m. to find Crockett with a gunshot wound. He was rushed to McLaren Bay Region hospital where he succumbed to his injuries during emergency surgery.
Kane, a resident of Bay City and originally from Bellevue, Ohio, was a graduate of Clyde High School,
class of 2014. He was the proud owner of Crockett's Tree Service LLC, a business born from his lifelong passion for the outdoors. This love for nature began at a young age through hunting, fishing, and camping trips with his family. He was a father to his son, Kaysen.
The investigation into the shooting quickly identified a suspect. Initially, authorities were searching for a light-skinned Black man who was seen fleeing the area in a red sedan. The investigation led to 33-year-old Shawn Meredith, who surrendered to authorities on the evening of Monday, March 24, 2025. Meredith was subsequently charged with felony murder in connection with Crockett's death and is being held at the Bay County Jail.
Two memorial services were held to honor Kane's life, one in Fremont, Ohio, and another in Bay City, reflecting his connections to both communities. He was remembered for his kind and adventurous spirit, his willingness to help others, and his deep love for his family and friends.
