On the evening of January 4, 2025, Lajarvious Earl Smith, a 31-year-old African American man from Springfield, Illinois, lost his life to gun violence. At approximately 7:44 p.m., the Sangamon County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of shots fired in the 2800 block of East Carpenter Street.
