On the evening of January 4, 2025, Lajarvious Earl Smith, a 31-year-old African American man from Springfield, Illinois, lost his life to gun violence. At approximately 7:44 p.m., the Sangamon County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of shots fired in the 2800 block of East Carpenter Street. Upon arrival, deputies discovered that a vehicle had transported two individuals to HSHS St. John's Hospital after being fired upon. Lajarvious Smith sustained multiple serious gunshot wounds and was pronounced deceased at 8:33 p.m. A 23-year-old female passenger in the vehicle suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
Investigators determined that over 50 shots were fired at the vehicle. Witnesses reported seeing a dark, four-door sedan fleeing east on Carpenter Street immediately after the shooting. The Sangamon County Sheriff's Office canvassed the area for witnesses and video evidence, processing the extensive crime scene. An autopsy for Lajarvious Smith was scheduled for the following Monday to further examine the circumstances of his death.
Lajarvious Smith was born on July 12, 1993, in Greenwood, Mississippi, to Evonite Smith and Ricky R. Smith Sr. He was a dedicated barber at Skillz Barber Shop for approximately 13 years and a lifelong drummer, serving faithfully at the Word and Spirit Worship Center. Known for his fun-loving and respectful nature, he was a beloved father to nine children. His sudden passing has left a profound impact on his family, friends, and the Springfield community.
