She was celebrating New Year's Eve with her family near NW 27th Ave. and NW 21st St. when she was struck by a stray bullet fired into the air in what authorities described as "celebratory gunfire." The Miami-Dade Police Department confirmed that the incident occurred just minutes after midnight, marking the beginning of the new year with devastating consequences.
The young girl
was outside her family's apartment, lighting fireworks alongside her loved ones, when she suddenly collapsed. Her parents rushed to her side and discovered a gunshot wound to the back of her head. In a desperate attempt to save her, they immediately placed her in a vehicle and raced toward the nearest hospital while calling for emergency assistance. Hialeah Fire Rescue intercepted them en route and transported Yanelis to Jackson Ryder Trauma Center, where she was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
Yanelis Munguia, originally from Leon, Nicaragua, was described by her family and teachers as a bright and joyful child. She was a fourth-grade student at Melrose Elementary School, where she was known for her nurturing nature, especially toward her younger brother. Her grandfather, Ramon Valdizol, expressed his heartbreak, stating that he could not bear to enter the family's home knowing he would never see her again.
Authorities are actively investigating the case, but as of now, no arrests have been made, and the shooter remains unidentified. The Miami-Dade Police Department has urged anyone with information to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers at 471-8477. Meanwhile, Yanelis’s family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to cover funeral and medical expenses, receiving an outpouring of support from the community.
