Michelle Coleman, a 21-year-old African American woman and nursing student at Florida A&M University, was fatally shot on July 6, 2009, during a birthday party in the Overtown neighborhood of Miami, Florida. The incident occurred when three armed men, dressed in black, opened fire on the crowd at approximately 12:45 a.m., injuring 12 individuals. Michelle Coleman sustained multiple gunshot wounds to her chest, kidney, and liver, leading to her death the following day on July 7, 2009.
Another victim, 17-year-old Anthony Smith, a high school football player, succumbed to his injuries on July 9, 2009.
The shooting was reportedly a retaliatory act. The party's host, Lawrence Smith, had allegedly been involved in a shooting incident with a group of Liberty City drug dealers the night before. One of the suspected retaliators, 18-year-old Rodney Miller, was arrested in August 2009 and charged with two counts of second-degree murder.
Despite the arrest, the case did not proceed to trial. In August 2013, after nearly four years in custody, Rodney Miller was released due to insufficient evidence to prosecute the case. Michelle Coleman's family expressed profound disappointment and continued to seek justice for her death. At the time of her passing, Michelle Coleman had recently discovered she was pregnant, adding to the family's grief over the loss of both her and her unborn child.
