On February 23, 2025, Trina J. Hollings, a 31-year-old woman from Normal, Illinois, was one of three victims in a multiple murder-suicide incident that occurred at a residence in the 900 block of North Lee Street in Bloomington, Illinois. Hollings was visiting the home as a friend of Chelsea L. Lusher when the tragic events unfolded.
The perpetrator was identified as Christopher H. Simmons, age 33, who was the boyfriend of Chelsea Lusher. According to police investigations, Simmons fatally shot Hollings and two other victims - Chelsea Lusher, 31, and her 13-year-old son Armoni L. Bennett - before turning the weapon on himself. Preliminary autopsy results revealed that Hollings died from multiple gunshot wounds.
The scene was discovered by another resident of the home, who immediately contacted law enforcement shortly before 11 AM that Sunday. Police recovered the murder weapon, a handgun, beneath Simmons' body. Investigation revealed that while Simmons had legally purchased the firearm in 2021, his Illinois Firearm Owners Identification card had been revoked sometime after the purchase, making his possession of the weapon illegal at the time of the incident.
The Bloomington Police Department, under Chief Jamal Simington, conducted a thorough investigation of the high-profile case. The community response included a candlelight vigil held outside the Lee Street home the following Monday night, where dozens gathered to honor the victims, including Hollings. The gathering was marked by strong emotions as community members lit candles, released balloons, and shared memories of those lost.
