On February 23, 2025, 31-year-old Chelsea Lynn Lusher, a white woman from Bloomington, Illinois, was tragically killed in a triple murder-suicide that also claimed the lives of her 13-year-old son, Armoni Bennett, and her 31-year-old friend, Trina Hollings. The perpetrator was identified as 33-year-old Christopher H. Simmons, Chelsea Lusher's boyfriend. According to authorities, Simmons fatally shot Chelsea Lusher, her son, and her friend before turning the gun on himself. The incident occurred at a residence on the 900 block of North Lee Street in Bloomington.
Chelsea Lusher, a 31-year-old white woman, was remembered as a devoted mother, sister, aunt, and friend. She was a graduate of Bloomington High School, Class of 2012. Her son, Armoni Bennett, was a student at Bloomington Junior High School. The third victim, Trina Hollings, a 31-year-old woman from Normal, Illinois, was a close friend of Lusher. All three victims died from multiple gunshot wounds, as confirmed by preliminary autopsy reports. Simmons died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
The firearm used in the killings was recovered at the scene under Simmons' body. He had legally purchased the gun in 2021; however, his Illinois Firearm Owners Identification card was later revoked, prohibiting him from legally possessing firearms at the time of the incident. Simmons had a prior conviction for unlawful use of a weapon in 2022 and was serving an 18-month conditional discharge, which was set to expire in March 2025.
Investigators have not determined a clear motive for the killings. There were no prior documented incidents of domestic violence involving Simmons and Lusher in McLean County. Police records indicate no calls for service at either Simmons' previous addresses or Lusher's home on Lee Street in the past four years. Simmons was not subject to any active or previous orders of protection. Despite the lack of documented history, family members have suggested that domestic violence may have been a factor. At a community vigil, Lusher's sister, Amber Thompson, urged individuals in abusive relationships to seek help, emphasizing the devastating consequences of domestic violence.
The Bloomington Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
