Major Smith, a 6-year-old boy from Lakeland, Florida, tragically lost his life on January 5, 2025, after suffering an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound. The incident occurred outside his home in the 200 block of West Crawford Street. Major, who was on the autism spectrum, had just returned from a trip to the store with his father, Myron Smith Sr., and his adult brother, Myron Smith Jr. After exiting their rental vehicle, a gray Nissan Altima, Major managed to reenter the car while his father was making a phone call. Inside the vehicle, he found a Glock 19X pistol that had been left unsecured between the driver’s seat and the center console. Moments later, a gunshot rang out, and his father rushed to the car to find Major with a severe head injury.
Following the incident, Major was immediately transported to Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center by his brother. Despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday afternoon. The Lakeland Police Department responded to the scene and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Authorities confirmed that no charges had been filed at the time, but the case remained open and active. The police urged anyone with relevant information to contact Detective Neal Robertson.
Major was described by his family as a joyful and loving child who brought light and happiness to those around him. His grandmother, Cynthia Rodriguez, initiated a fundraising campaign to help cover medical and funeral expenses.
