On that fateful morning, a 911 call led deputies to a home on East Magnolia Street, where they discovered a gruesome crime scene. Washington, along with 31-year-old Stacy Branch and 23-year-old Angelica Castro, was found dead, while an 18-year-old named Felix Campos was critically injured with a gunshot wound to his face. The home was notorious in the area as a hub for drug activity, dealing in marijuana, cocaine, pills, and other substances.
The investigation revealed that the murders were the result of a drug-related home invasion. Three men from Miami—Johnathan Alcegaire, Andrew Joseph, and Jamaal John Smith—were identified as the perpetrators. They had traveled to Lakeland with the intent to rob the house, which they knew to be a "one-stop shop" for drugs. During the robbery, the suspects took drugs, money, and other items, leaving behind a trail of devastation.
Johnathan Alcegaire was convicted on September 27, 2018, of multiple charges, including three counts of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, burglary with assault or battery while armed, conspiracy to commit armed robbery, and tampering with physical evidence. He was sentenced to death for each of the murders. The other two suspects, Andrew Joseph and Jamaal John Smith, were also charged with first-degree murder and other related offenses. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for both, and their trials are pending.
