On a tragic Friday morning in Great Bend, Kansas, the life of 32-year-old Hispanic female Esmeralda Torres-Lopez was cut short in a violent act that ended in a dramatic police chase and the death of her suspected killer. The events of December 27, 2024, began to unfold around 9:10 a.m. when officers from the Great Bend Police Department were dispatched to Los Compadres Mexican Store, located at 1516 7th St., following reports of a disturbance.
The situation quickly escalated from a domestic dispute to a homicide.
Upon arrival, officers learned from witnesses that Mario Martinez-Garcia, also 32, had entered the establishment where Torres-Lopez worked, forcibly removed her from the building, and shot her. Emergency medical services were dispatched to the scene and transported Torres-Lopez to a local hospital. Despite their efforts, she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at 9:55 a.m. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation later confirmed that Torres-Lopez and Martinez-Garcia were in a relationship, referring to them as "significant others."
Immediately after the shooting, Martinez-Garcia fled the scene in a white 2021 Chevy Silverado. Nearby detectives spotted the speeding truck and a high-speed pursuit ensued, involving officers from the Great Bend Police Department and the Barton County Sheriff's Office. The chase proceeded south on U.S. 281 Highway into neighboring Stafford County, with speeds reportedly exceeding 90 mph.
Law enforcement officers deployed a tire deflation device near St. John, successfully puncturing the tires of the Silverado. The chase continued westbound on U.S. 50 Highway until a deputy from the Barton County Sheriff's Office performed a tactical vehicle intervention, causing the pickup to leave the roadway and crash through a barbed-wire fence near mile marker 191. As officers cautiously approached the disabled vehicle, they found Martinez-Garcia inside, deceased from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head; a handgun was found with him. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:45 a.m., just ten minutes before Torres-Lopez was pronounced dead at the hospital. The KBI has taken the lead on the investigation into the murder-suicide, with their findings to be presented to the Stafford County Attorney for review.
