John Robert LaPoint, a 52-year-old White male, passed away on Sunday, January 5, 2025, at his home near Liberal, Kansas. His death is being investigated as a homicide.
On that Sunday afternoon, at approximately 3:00 p.m., the Seward County Sheriff's Office, along with other emergency services, were dispatched to a residence in rural Seward County following a report of a gunshot victim.
Upon arrival at the property located on Denoon Road, law enforcement discovered three individuals at the scene. Inside the residence, they found John Robert LaPoint deceased from what appeared to be gunshot wounds.
A 25-year-old male was taken into custody at the home without incident. The individual arrested was later identified as Payton D. LaPoint, the victim's son. Payton LaPoint has since made his first appearance in Seward County District Court and is facing charges of Murder in the Second Degree and being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm. Authorities have indicated that this was an isolated incident and that there is no ongoing threat to the community. The investigation into the motive and circumstances surrounding the shooting is ongoing.
