Breon Dusse Allen, a 7-year-old African American boy, tragically lost his life on January 24, 2025, in Jacksonville, Florida, in what authorities have described as a targeted shooting. The incident occurred in the 2200 block of Commonwealth Avenue on the city's Westside. Allen was walking with his cousin, 21-year-old Lafayette Mango Jr., when a dark-colored vehicle, believed to be a Kia Soul, pulled up. Multiple individuals exited the vehicle and opened fire, striking both Allen and Mango.
Allen was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries, while Mango survived with serious wounds.
Authorities quickly launched an intensive investigation, deploying dozens of detectives to track down those responsible. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office recovered the vehicle used in the shooting and determined that the attack was gang-related. The investigation led to multiple arrests. Initially, four individuals—Keith Fields Dannel Larkins Keith Johnson and Zharod Sykes —were charged with second-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and attempted first-degree murder. All four were documented gang members or associates. Later, two additional suspects, 17-year-olds Donte McGhee and Tavaris Kelly, were arrested and charged with murder, attempted murder, and conspiracy to commit murder. Authorities identified them as the shooters.
Sheriff T.K. Waters described the crime as a "targeted, planned act of bloodshed" and vowed to bring all responsible parties to justice. He emphasized that individuals who commit such violent acts should not be allowed to walk freely in the community. The arrests marked a significant step in the investigation, with Waters stating that law enforcement would not rest until all perpetrators were held accountable.
Allen's mother, Casheena Love, expressed deep grief over the loss of her son, describing him as a "superstar athlete" and a beloved member of their family. She vowed to keep his memory alive and turn the tragedy into a positive movement. In response to the devastating loss, the community rallied around the family, offering support and raising funds to assist with expenses and memorial arrangements.
