On a cold morning in Indianapolis, Indiana, a 26-year-old Black male named Jarrell Lamont Pryor was the victim of a calculated ambush that ended his life on January 25, 2025. A dedicated single father known for his deep devotion to his young daughter, Pryor believed he was meeting a woman he had connected with on Instagram for a date. The evening began with promise as he finished his shift at a local warehouse and made plans to meet 19-year-old Alexis Hawkins.
The pair eventually met up, visiting a McDonald's and a liquor store, but unbeknownst to Pryor, the encounter was a setup orchestrated to rob him.
Throughout the night, Hawkins was allegedly communicating with her boyfriend, 18-year-old Brian Winston Jr., coordinating a plan to ambush Pryor under the guise of a romantic outing. Around 1:15 a.m., police responded to reports of gunfire near the intersection of East 49th Street and North Primrose Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered Pryor lying critically wounded outside his vehicle. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was rushed to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Investigators later uncovered the digital trail left behind, revealing text messages that detailed the conspiracy to target Pryor for his money.
The investigation led to a series of arrests over the following months as detectives pieced together the events of that fatal night. Alexis Hawkins was taken into custody on February 26 and charged with murder and robbery resulting in serious bodily injury, with police alleging she lured Pryor to the location. Her boyfriend, Brian Winston Jr., was identified as the suspected shooter and was apprehended by U.S. Marshals in Austin, Texas, on April 2 before being extradited back to Indiana to face charges of murder, felony murder, and robbery.
Months later, a third suspect was implicated in the crime. On November 3, authorities arrested Malachi Wells at a gas station on Southeastern Avenue. Wells was taken into custody on an active warrant for murder and robbery resulting in serious bodily injury, with additional charges filed for possession of a handgun and marijuana found at the time of his arrest. The tragedy left Pryor's family and his three-year-old daughter to mourn the loss of a hardworking father whose life was cut short by a deceptive scheme.
