Calvin Bell, a 47-year-old man from Springfield, Illinois, was fatally shot on March 8, 2025. Authorities responded to reports of a large fight in the 800 block of Stevenson Drive around 2:03 a.m., during which gunshots were heard. Emergency responders transported Bell to HSHS St. John’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:26 a.m. An autopsy later confirmed that he died from a gunshot wound.
The Springfield Police Department launched an investigation into the incident. At approximately 7:30 a.m. on the same day, officers executed a search warrant at a residence on West North Grand Avenue, leading to the questioning of two individuals. Later that afternoon, police arrested 38-year-old Emmanuel K. Watts of Springfield in connection with Bell’s death. Watts was charged with first-degree murder, aggravated battery/discharge of a firearm, aggravated discharge of a firearm, and unlawful possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. He remains in custody as the investigation continues.
