Hason Willis, a 43-year-old African American man from Springfield, Illinois, tragically lost his life on October 4, 2021. The incident occurred on Adlai Stevenson Drive, where Hason was fatally shot. The Springfield Police Department received a ShotSpotter alert around 9:23 p.m., followed by multiple calls reporting shots fired and a person being shot. Hason was found at the scene and was rushed to St. John's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:37 p.m. Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon confirmed that Hason died from a single gunshot wound. His death was immediately classified as a homicide, prompting an investigation by local authorities.
During the investigation, detectives uncovered that an altercation had taken place at the same location the night before the shooting. This altercation involved a suspect brandishing a gun and threatening individuals at the scene. The suspect was identified as 37-year-old Christopher Hall, a Caucasian man from Beloit, Wisconsin. Hall was arrested two days after the shooting by Springfield Police officers and U.S. Marshals from the Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force at a Super 8 Motel in Springfield. He was charged with four counts of first-degree murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm, and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon. Hall was also labeled an armed habitual criminal due to his previous offenses and was held at the Sangamon County Jail on a $2 million bond.
The case against Christopher Hall proceeded with a grand jury indictment, which included the aforementioned charges. The investigation revealed that Hall had a warrant out of Wisconsin for a parole violation at the time of his arrest. The night before the shooting, Hall had been involved in a disturbance at the same location, during which he displayed a gun, but this incident was not reported to the police. The authorities believe that this prior altercation may have escalated, leading to the fatal shooting of Hason Willis.
