In the late morning of February 5, 2025, a burst of violence shattered the ordinary atmosphere of the Windy Hill Village shopping center in Marietta, Georgia. Twenty-one-year-old Jabril Abdul Blount, an African American male, was inside a vehicle when he was struck by multiple gunshots. The incident occurred around 10:42 a.m. near U.S. 41, a busy thoroughfare. When officers from the Cobb County Police Department arrived at the scene at 2359 Windy Hill Road, they found Blount grievously wounded.
Despite any efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting quickly progressed as a suspect voluntarily surrendered to law enforcement. Eric Townsend, a 53-year-old resident of Alabama, turned himself in to the Smyrna Police Department shortly after the fatal shooting. He was subsequently transferred to the custody of the Cobb County Police Department. Townsend was charged with felony murder and aggravated assault in connection with Blount's death. He was being held at the Cobb County Jail without bond. Authorities have not publicly disclosed a motive for the shooting, and it remains unclear if there was any prior relationship between Townsend and Blount.
Jabril Abdul Blount, a resident of Roswell, Georgia, was remembered as a kind and intelligent young man. Born on December 3, 2003, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, he later relocated to Georgia. He had attended the University of Alabama before returning to Georgia to pursue a career as an electrician, enrolling at Lincoln Technical School. His family and friends recalled his love for sports and video games, and the close bonds he shared with his siblings and friends. In the wake of his death, a memorial gathering was held to honor his life.
