In the winter of 2025, the city of Roswell, Georgia, was struck by a tragedy that would leave a lasting scar on the community. A dedicated and beloved public servant, 24-year-old male, Jeremy Labonte, lost his life in the line of duty. An officer with the Roswell Police Department, Labonte was known for his unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of the residents he swore to protect. His career in law enforcement began in November 2021, and over the subsequent years, he became a respected member of the nightshift patrol, known for his courage and his compassionate nature.
On the evening of Friday, February 7, 2025, a call came in about a suspicious person at a shopping complex located in the 1400 block of Market Boulevard. Officer Labonte was among those who responded to the scene. Upon his arrival, he encountered a man behind the shopping center. The situation escalated rapidly when the individual, identified as 23-year-old Edward Espinoza, allegedly produced a handgun and opened fire. Officer Labonte was struck multiple times. Despite the immediate efforts of his fellow officers and first responders to render aid, and his subsequent transport to a local hospital, Jeremy Labonte succumbed to his injuries.
The aftermath of the shooting saw a swift response from law enforcement. Edward Espinoza was located near the scene and taken into custody shortly after the incident. He was subsequently booked into the Fulton County Jail. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation took up the case and brought forth charges against Espinoza that included murder, aggravated assault against a law enforcement officer, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a felony. The community mourned the loss of a man described as a friend, a husband, and a son, whose absence created a void that could never be filled.
