Victor Lazo, a 27-year-old man of Venezuelan descent, was shot and killed on the night of August 19, 2021, in the parking lot of the Manchester at Mansell Apartment Complex in Alpharetta, a community near Roswell, Georgia. The incident, which unfolded around 10:30 p.m., stemmed from an argument that escalated into fatal violence. Lazo, who was a resident of the apartment complex, was a beloved son, brother, and friend, known for his compassionate nature and willingness to help others.
Witnesses at the scene, including Lazo's sister, reported hearing a confrontation between Lazo and two other men shortly before the sound of multiple gunshots shattered the evening's calm. Surveillance footage from the area captured two men fleeing the scene immediately after the shooting. The Alpharetta and Roswell Police Departments launched a joint investigation, quickly identifying the suspects as fellow residents of the apartment complex, Zion Azure Heyward, 18, and Jaycob Lawrence Allen-Jones, 19. The investigation revealed that the argument leading to the shooting may have started after the two men were reportedly making advances toward Lazo's girlfriend, and he and a friend intervened.
Following the identification of the suspects, warrants were issued for their arrest on charges of murder, aggravated assault, and armed robbery. On August 24, 2021, Zion Heyward turned himself in to the authorities and was booked into the Fulton County Jail.
