Isiah Matthews, a 58-year-old man, died on March 12, 2025, from complications related to a gunshot wound sustained during a robbery incident in Chicago, Illinois. The Cook County medical examiner’s office ruled his death a homicide. Matthews was shot on February 18, 2025, in the Austin neighborhood of Chicago while allegedly attempting to rob a 68-year-old woman.
The incident occurred in the 5000 block of West Congress Parkway when Matthews, armed with a gun, approached the woman’s vehicle, forced open the driver’s side door, and announced a robbery. He reportedly took $3 from the victim before her relatives intervened.
During the confrontation, the victim’s 38-year-old son engaged in a physical struggle with Matthews. At some point during the altercation, Matthews suffered a gunshot wound to his left leg. When police arrived at the scene, they took Matthews into custody after the 68-year-old woman identified him as the assailant. Matthews was initially transported to Stroger Hospital for treatment before being transferred to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park. Despite medical intervention, he succumbed to complications from the gunshot wound nearly a month later.
Authorities have not disclosed who fired the shot that injured Matthews, and no individuals at the scene admitted to hearing or discharging a firearm. Area 4 detectives are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting and Matthews’ death. The case remains open as law enforcement seeks further clarity on the events that transpired during the robbery.
