In the quiet community of Lake Station, Indiana, a devastating tragedy unfolded on Friday, February 21, 2025, claiming the lives of a young mother and her three small children. Twenty-seven-year-old Briana Payne, an African American woman known for her dedication to her family and community, was found deceased in her home in a mobile home park. A licensed caregiver and secretary for the parent-teacher organization, Briana was described by her mother as a loyal person who would go out of her way
to help anyone.
Responding to a welfare check request, officers from the Lake Station Police Department arrived at the residence in the 6700 block of 9th Avenue in the afternoon. After obtaining a search warrant, they made a grim discovery inside. Briana and her three daughters, 7-year-old Aurorah, 6-year-old Ava, and 4-year-old Alayna, were all found dead from gunshot wounds. The Lake County Coroner's Office subsequently ruled their deaths as homicides.
The investigation into the horrific event quickly identified a suspect in the killings. Also found deceased in the home was Briana's 31-year-old husband, Robert Payne. Authorities determined that he had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and his death was ruled a suicide.
