On a tragic day in Lake Station, Indiana, the life of 4-year-old Alayna Jai Payne was cut short in a devastating act of violence. On February 21, 2025, police conducted a welfare check at a mobile home on 9th Avenue, where they discovered a scene of immense sorrow. Inside, Alayna, her two older sisters, 7-year-old Aurorah Tatiana and 6-year-old Ava Denise, and their 27-year-old mother, Briana Payne, were found deceased.
The Lake County Coroner's Office later confirmed that all four had died from gunshot wounds and their deaths were ruled as homicides.
The investigation revealed a heart-wrenching murder-suicide perpetrated by the children's father and Briana's husband, 31-year-old Robert Payne. Authorities found him deceased at the scene as well, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. This horrific event claimed the lives of the entire family of five.
Neighbors reported hearing arguments from the family's home in the days leading up to the incident and noticed that their cars had not been moved, which was unusual. Briana's mother disclosed that her daughter had informed her husband of her desire for a divorce just days before the killings. A former supervisor of Briana's also stated that Robert Payne had attempted to isolate his wife from those around her, raising red flags for those who knew the family.
The community was left in shock and mourning. Grief counselors were made available at Virgil Bailey Elementary School, where Ava and Aurorah were students. A GoFundMe campaign was established to help with the funeral expenses for Briana and her three young daughters, who were described as her heart and soul. In the wake of this tragedy, the Lake Station Mayor and Police Department offered their condolences and support to the affected family and the grieving community.
