In a devastating incident that shook the community of Lake Station, Indiana, seven-year-old Aurorah Tatiana Payne was found deceased on February 21, 2025. The young girl, along with her mother and two younger sisters, were victims of a violent act that ended their lives far too soon. Aurorah was a student at Virgil Bailey Elementary School, where she was known for her joyful spirit.
The tragic discovery was made when police conducted a welfare check at the family's home in the Mansard Du
Lac Mobile Home Community. Upon entering the residence, officers found the bodies of Aurorah, her sisters, four-year-old Alayna Jai Payne and six-year-old Ava Denise Payne, and their 27-year-old mother, Briana Payne. All four had been fatally shot, and their deaths were ruled as homicides by the Lake County Coroner's Office.
Also found at the scene was the girls' father, 31-year-old Robert Payne, who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The investigation concluded that Robert Payne was the perpetrator in a murder-suicide, having taken the lives of his wife and three daughters before ending his own. It was reported that in the days leading up to the tragedy, Briana Payne had informed her husband of her intention to file for divorce. Neighbors had also heard arguments coming from the family's home. Family and friends noted that Robert had displayed controlling behavior, often isolating Briana from her support network. The community mourned the immense loss, holding a candlelight vigil to honor the memories of the mother and her three young daughters.
