In the early morning hours of June 2, 2024, a large gathering of people in the parking lot of Ashworth Park in Des Moines, Iowa, turned into a scene of chaos and violence. Amid the crowd, multiple gunshots suddenly rang out, causing panic. When police arrived at approximately 1:30 a.m., they discovered Courtany Neva Mundy-Gonzalez, a 34-year-old White / Caucasian female, in the parking lot with devastating injuries. She had been shot and also struck by a vehicle.

Bystanders and officers rushed to her side, performing CPR before she was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. The violence of that morning also left two other people, a pair of 19-year-old men, with serious gunshot wounds. They were taken to a separate hospital by private vehicles. While the two young men remained hospitalized, Courtany's fight for her life came to a tragic end four days later, on June 6, 2024, when she succumbed to her injuries. Her death marked the city's fifth homicide of the year.

In the aftermath, the Des Moines Police Department launched an intensive investigation into the violent incident. Detectives have interviewed more than two dozen witnesses and executed nearly 30 search warrants, recovering a significant amount of evidence. However, the investigation has been met with challenges, as authorities reported that many witnesses have been reluctant to provide information about what transpired during the chaotic gathering. To date, no arrests have been made in the case, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The case remains an active and unsolved homicide investigation, with police and her family appealing to the public for any information that might lead to an arrest and bring justice for Courtany.
