In the early morning hours of June 3, 2017, the life of 36-year-old Mary Dudley, a female resident of Des Moines, Iowa, was tragically cut short in her own apartment. Responding to reports of a shooting at the Southbrook Green apartment complex on Evergreen Avenue, police and rescue workers arrived to find Mary deceased at the scene. The incident that unfolded was the culmination of ongoing domestic issues, a narrative that would become clearer as the investigation progressed.
The
primary suspect in Mary's death was quickly identified as her 50-year-old estranged husband, Harold Dudley. Though the couple was married, they had been living separately, with Mary having moved into the apartment following Harold's filing for a dissolution of their marriage just a couple of months prior. On the morning of the shooting, Mary had called 911 to report that Harold was at the apartment complex. He then forcibly entered her apartment armed with a handgun. Witnesses in the apartment complex reported hearing three to five gunshots.
Following the shooting, Harold Dudley fled the scene but was apprehended later the same day in Ames, Iowa, by the Ames Police Department. He was subsequently transferred back to Des Moines, where he was charged with first-degree murder and first-degree burglary. The case against him highlighted a troubled relationship, and during the investigation, he reportedly made strange statements to the police, referencing "the seven deadly sins" in relation to his actions.
Harold Dudley was ultimately found guilty of the murder of his wife. In October 2018, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. An additional 25-year sentence for the burglary charge was set to run consecutively. During the sentencing, the judge referred to the murder as an "execution," noting that Mary had been shot five times. Family members, including Mary's mother and sister, gave emotional victim impact statements, remembering her as a vibrant human being and not just a statistic of domestic violence.
