Nyamal Deng, a 26-year-old Black / African American woman, was fatally wounded in a shooting that took place in Des Moines, Iowa. On the evening of October 10, 2021, a violent altercation occurred outside the High Dive bar. During the incident, Deng was struck in the neck by a stray bullet. Another individual, a 27-year-old man, also sustained injuries during the shooting but was treated and released from the hospital.
Following the shooting, Nyamal Deng was rushed to a local hospital
for medical treatment. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, she succumbed to her injuries nine days later on November 19, 2021. Her death was ruled a homicide by the medical examiner, with the cause of death identified as a gunshot wound to the neck.
The investigation into the shooting was conducted by the Des Moines Police Department. Detectives were able to identify a suspect in the case, leading to an arrest on October 20, 2021. The individual taken into custody was 33-year-old Wichang Gach Chawech of Des Moines, who was reported to be Deng's cousin. Chawech was subsequently charged with first-degree murder in connection with Nyamal Deng's death and attempted murder for the injuries sustained by the second victim.
Wichang Gach Chawech's case proceeded through the judicial system. While he was acquitted of the murder charge, a jury found him guilty of lesser felonies. His convictions included assault with the intent to commit serious injury against Nyamal Deng, willful injury causing serious injury, and intimidation with a dangerous weapon. He was later sentenced for his role in the 2021 shooting.
